Supreme court came into action after petition of activist for cutting trees at Aarey colony stating that Mumbai metro corp. ltd. is falling trees for making metro shad. Court has observed that "it appears that Aarey was some kind of forest at some time,” by taking account of 2012 Management plan for sanjay gandhi National park, which describe aarey is unclassified forest.
The Apex court hit hard to the state government asking "Tell us how many sapling you planted. How they grown? What's the status of your forest?... This question has arised after Mumbai Metro claimed that it had planted 24000 saplings compensating those fallen tress.
Geographical condition of Aarey forest is like the heart of the city and if it cut down the increasing pollution level will let all Mumbai in bad situation.Solicitor general Tushar Mehta appeared on behalf of State government making statement that Mumbai Metro Corp. has already cut enough trees to make metro shed. Apex court after hearing the statement issued directions to State government to maintain its Status quo till the next hearing on October 21.
Special SC bench constituted
Hearing is conducted by special bench of Supreme court comprising Justices Arun Mishra and Ashok Bhushan, as the SC judges are on vacation from October 7 to 12 for Dussehra. The Supreme Court had a day earlier agreed to hold a special sitting on the matter after it converted the representation by some law students into public interest litigation. The Aarey forest petitions demanded a stay on the felling of trees in Mumbai’s Aarey colony.
How it all started
The Aarey forest protest began on October 5,2019 after Bombay High court allowed the Mumbai Metro to cut nearly 2500 trees to build a car shed for the Mumbai metro.
Mumbai Metro corporation has started cutting trees just after HC order, this Movement of Metro corp. faced resistance from social activist and environment analyst.
Many people took this protest to the social media protesting for NO MORE DEFORESTATION at Aarey colony. Many celebrities joined the campaign like alia bhatt, Dia mirza and Madhuri dixit.
MMRCL DEFENDED ITS ACTION
Ashwini Bhide’s tweet came after the MMRCL claimed through a video that it has planted around 24,000 trees to make up for the destruction of the green patch in Aarey.
